Nest Learning Thermostat

This new thermostat is incredible. First, it learns from your temperature changes. No set temperatures or rigid programs. Instead, it remembers the temperatures you like and builds its own schedule – all you need to do is turn it up and down and eventually it takes over. Second, it uses sensors to detect when you are away and automatically, yes automatically, will turn down your heating or air conditioning. Moreover, it learns your schedule so it knows how much inactivity means you are actually out of your house. Third, it can be controlled from your mobile device – such as iPhone or Android – from anywhere.

Learn more at http://www.nest.com/.

Lockitron

This is a very new product. Essentially, this product fits over your existing deadbolts and allows you to lock / unlock your door from anywhere via your mobile device. It can also automatically detect when you are close via your smartphone and unlock automatically. Additional features include notifications when someone else unlocks your door and a vibration sensor that can alert you via your phone when someone is knocking. Don’t worry, you can always use your trusty key.

Learn more at https://lockitron.com/.

Cool stuff.

Many clients we work with have questions about Geothermal, as it is becoming a popular cost-effective option for heating and cooling, both in the commercial and residential markets. So what is Geothermal? And is it for you?

Geothermal heating and/or cooling refers to the direct use of geothermal energy (or energy generated and stored in the earth) for heating and cooling applications. These electrically powered systems tap the stored energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth. Essentially, the system uses the earth as a heat source (in the winter) or a heat sink (in the summer). The system takes advantage of the moderate temperatures in the ground to boost efficiency and reduce the operational costs of heating and cooling systems.

Every geothermal heating and cooling system has three major parts:

an earth connection (underground pipe loops) for transferring heat between its fluid and the earth;

a small, indoor geothermal heat pump to move heat between the building and the fluid in the earth connection;

and a distribution system for circulating warm and cool air in the building.

A contractor installs a system of piping loops in the ground that circulates water or other fluids like Glycol through these loops and back into the commercial or residential facility. The fluid is either heated or cooled by the ground depending on the desired temperature. Then, when the fluid enters the facility, a heat pump transfers the heat between the building air and fluid. Finally, the heated/cooled air is spread throughout the building with an air distribution system (blowers, ducts, etc.). The system is very quiet, can simultaneously heat & cool different parts of the same building, eliminates boilers, chillers and large mechanical rooms.

Geothermal systems are a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly way of heating and cooling buildings. Both the DOE and the EPA have endorsed the technology. They can reliably deliver quality air-conditioning and heating, on demand, in every season. The technology is appropriate for new construction as well as retrofits of older buildings. The flexible design requirements make them a good choice for schools, high-rises, government buildings, apartments, and restaurants–almost any commercial property. Lower operating and maintenance costs, durability, and energy conservation make geothermal a smart choice for commercial applications.

Contrast Mechanical has experience installing commercial geothermal systems as well as repairing and servicing existing piping loops, heat pumps, and air distribution systems.

1) Annual Backflow Preventer Testing and Certification

Government regulations require backflow prevention devices on commercial and industrial plumbing applications. And, these devices must be tested and certified on an annual basis. The annual backflow test must be completed by a licensed plumber who has completed the mandatory three day test administrated by the State of Michigan.

2) Annual Boiler CSD-1 Testing

Under boiler law and rules, 1965 PA 290, you have certain responsibilities to assure the continued safe operation of your boiler. Annual Control Safety Device -1 or CSD-1 Testing is REQUIRED in the state of Michigan on ALL commercial boiler applications. You may have received a notice from the State because their records indicate that you are the owner/user of a boiler required to be registered with the State of Michigan.

3) Annual Mechanical Equipment Preventative Inspections

Waiting until a major problem surfaces with you equipment (boilers, AC units, pumps, water heaters, etc.) often means you waited too long. Just like a car needs regular oil changes and tune ups, your mechanical equipment needs the same attention and care. Contact a technician to inspect and tune up your equipment on a yearly basis.

4) Annual Plumbing Valve Inspections

From the largest industrial valves to the stops under your fixtures, properly functioning valves are vital to the efficient and safe operation of any mechanical system. Hire a qualified contractor to inspect and, if need be, repair any broken or failing valves. Make sure you can depend on your valve when its needed.

Contrast Mechanical is a fully certified, licensed and experienced contractor for all of these maintenance services. We have the experience not only to perform these services for your commercial facility, but we can repair or replace any problem that is discovered. Contact us today.
